Social Impact Rating Scale
These examples might help when you are rating the social impact of a story.
Negative Social Impact
- -5.0 to -3.5
- Develops products or participates, willingly or as a result of negligence, in activities that have severe negative consequences on people and/or the environment (e.g. Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, etc.)
- -3.5 to -2.0
- Develops products or participates, willingly or as a result of negligence, in activities that have significant negative consequences on people and/or the envirsonment (e.g. the premise of Super Size Me)
- -2.0 to 0.0
- Develops products or participates, willingly or as a result of negligence, in activities that have minor negative consequences on people and/or the environment (e.g. the arguable environmental consequences of using paper or Styrofoam cups to serve beverages, even to customers who consume them at the place of purchase)
Neutral
- 0.0
- I don't care or understand what this company is doing, or I don't even know this company
Positive Social Impact
- 0.0 to +2.0
- Develops products or participates in activities that have a minor positive effect on people and/or the environment (e.g. a company donates $200k to a good cause)
- +2.0 to +3.5
- Develops products or participates in activities that have a significant positive effect on people and/or the environment (e.g. a company pledges 1% of its revenue to positive social impact through its foundation)
- +3.5 to +5.0
- Develops products or participates in activities that have a pioneering positive effect on people and/or the environment. Company commits a significant amount of its resources, financial and human, to innovation that make an unparalleled positive impact on people and/or the environment. (e.g. a company discovers a cure for cancer and opens access to the research, allowing generics to be manufactured quickly and easily)
